ST. GEORGE, Utah – The No. 5 Colorado Mesa University baseball team swept a doubleheader from the Dixie State Red Storm on Saturday afternoon at Bruce Hurst Field. The Mavericks won game one 10-5 and took the second game 3-2 in eight innings.
In game one,
Zach McLeod had four hits and
Austin Wallingford drove in four in the Mavericks 10-5 win. McLeod needed just a home run to complete the cycle in the game and Wallingford hit his first home run of the season that left the yard over the right center field wall.
Eight of the nine Colorado Mesa starters finished the game with at least one hit.
Ryan Reno took the ball to start game two of the series and picked up right where he left off last week. Reno allowed three runs on eight hits, walked one and struck out four in seven innings of work to earn his second win of the season.
In the night cap, the Mavericks and Red Storm finished seven innings tied at 1-1.
Colorado Mesa scored on a wild pitch and a RBI double by
Alex Fife to take a 3-1 lead heading to the bottom of the eighth inning.
Dixie State loaded the bases with nobody out and scored one run after an errant pick-off attempt.
The Red Storm were caught stealing after a failed squeeze attempt that would have tied the game and were caught leaving early after a fly out to center field which ended the game and the Dixie State comeback attempt.
McLeod and Wallingford each had a pair of hits in the game.
David Johnson earned the win in relief and
Tyler Ehlers picked up his third save of the season on the mound.
Colorado Mesa moved their record to 5-0 on the season while Dixie State fell to 0-7.
