ST. GEORGE, Utah – Colorado Mesa pounded out 14 hits and scored in eight of the nine innings in a 14-5 win over the Dixie State Red Storm on Friday evening in the series opener at Bruce Hurst Field.
The Mavericks scored one run in the first, two in the second, and one in the third to build a 5-1 lead after two and a half innings of play. The Red Storm posted a four-spot in the bottom half of the third inning but would not score after that as CMU scored nine unanswered runs to close out the game.
Junior
Matt Allen earned the win on the mound in relief of starter
Matt Delay. Allen threw five innings of shutout relief and allowed just four hits while striking out three to move his record to 1-0.
Seven of the nine starting position players earned a hit on the evening.
Austin Wallingford and
Kevan Elcock each finished the game with three hits on the evening. Wallingford drove in two and hit his first triple of the season while Elcock drove in three and hit his first big fly of the season in the top half of the fourth inning.
PJ Gonzalez and
Kyle Serrano each finished with two hits as well.
Cameron Johnson finished the night 1-for-2 with two runs and collected his first collegiate hit in the game. Johnson pinch hit for
Andy Scott in the top of the fourth inning.
The Mavericks and Red Storm will continue their series tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at 11am.
