Mavs Upset No. 2 Mountain Lions

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Ryan Stephen scored a career-high 40 points to lead Colorado Mesa University to a 100-92 upset win over No. 2 UCCS. The loss is the first for the Mountain Lions (14-1, 8-1) this season.

CMU improves to 12-4 overall and 7-3 in the RMAC.

Stephan shot 12-of-16 from the field, made all five 3-point attempts and shot 11-of-14 from the line. He also grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds. Stephan's 40 points was five shy of the school record.

Julian Vasquez also had a strong night offensively finishing with 24 points, including four 3-pointers.

Jerry Duckworth was the third Maverick in double digits finishing with 10.

The Mavericks scored the first six points of the game for an early 12-2 run.

CMU's lead grew to as many as 14, 23-9, with 12:47 remaining in the first.

UCCS drained four 3-pointers to tie the game at 33 with five minutes left in the first and would lead by one at the break 44-43.

Julian Vasquez made a pair of free throws with 12 minutes remaining to give the Mavericks the lead for good 68-66.

Vasquez would drain a 3-pointer with 5:30 remaining to grow the Maverick lead to 12 points.

Dalton Patten's tip-in with 40 seconds remaining cut the CMU lead to four, but the Mavs made four-of-six free throws to seal the win.

The last time the Mavericks scored 100 points was also against UCCS nearly 10 years ago on Feb. 27, 2004.

Derek White led UCCS with 34 points.

The Mavericks shot 58-percent (29-50) from the floor and held the Mountain Lions to 48-percent (32-66). Mesa was even better from deep shooting 63-percent (17-27). UCCS
was 38-percent (12-31) from behind the line.

CMU made 25-of-32 free throws while UCCS was 16-of-19.

The two teams were nearly even on the glass with Mesa finishing with a slim 31-30 edge.

Colorado Mesa will host Western State Jan. 17th.
