Box Score 2 CANYON, Texas – The Colorado Mesa volleyball team started the 2014 season with a bang defeating Eastern New Mexico and No. 6 West Texas A&M by identical scores of 3-0 Friday (Sept. 5).
The West Texas loss was the just 15
th lost at home for the Lady Buffs in school history.
Abby Ney dominated the first match of the day against Eastern New Mexico hitting a match-high .588 with a match-high 12 kills.
Melissa Hess and
Christian Otzen each finished in double digits for kills with a combined 21.
The Mavericks controlled the match offensively hitting .265 with 48 kills. The CMU defense also shined holding ENMU to a .128 hitting percentage from the field and only 28 kills.
The Mesa offense continued its production in the second match against nationally ranked West Texas. The Mavericks hit .233 but finished with a dominating 52-36 edge in kills.
Melissa Hess, an AVCA All-American Honorable Mention selection in 2013, hit .500 with a match-high 14 kills.
Teammate
Abby Ney was close behind hitting .455 with 12 kills.
CMU setter Jordan Moody led all players hitting .667 with four kills on six attempts. She finished with 45 assists in the match and 96 assists on the day.
"Melissa and Abby played great," said head coach
Dave Fleming. "Our defense and Jordan were able to get them the ball when we needed a kill. Overall it was a great team win."
Defense was the key for CMU in the first two sets winning 25-20 and 25-23. The Lady Buffs hit a match-high .297 in the third set, but the Mavs countered with a match-high 19 kills.
CMU (2-0) will close out the weekend with matches against Texas A&M – Commerce and Truman State Saturday (Sept. 6).
