Box Score LAKEWOOD, Colo. - Nine of the Colorado Mesa University volleyball teams ten wins this season have come in straight sets and it kept that trend alive tonight (Sept. 27) with a 3-0 win at Colorado Christian University.
The Mavericks took the lead to start the first set before falling behind the Cougars 9-6. The Mavericks would battle back to tie the game up at ten in what became a tight back and forth affair. The set would feature 16 ties and six lead changes before the Mavs won the set 25-23.
In the second set, the Mavericks once again took the lead early but found themselves tied midway through. With the score deadlocked at ten each,
Jordyn Moody came up with a big kill to give the Mavericks the lead. Colorado Mesa seized control of the set and would never look back. The Mavs dominated the second half of the set to beat the Cougars 25-18.
Needing one more set win to give the Mavericks another victory in straight sets, a attack error by the Cougars would give the Mavericks the first point of the match and they would never relinquish lead. A kill by
Casey Ball earned the Mavs a 25-20 win.
Casey Ball would tally her third double-double of the season with 12 kills and 13 digs while hitting .229.
Audrey Steinkirchner led the team in kills with 14.
Erin Perez got in on the action with 12 digs and seven kills.
Abby Ney had the highest hit percentage of any Mav who recorded ten or more total attacks on the night when she hit .368. Tiffany Peterson had a season-high 29 digs and one service ace in the match.
Jordyn Moody had 46 assists and a service ace.
Colorado Mesa hit .244 while holding Colorado Christian at .157. The Mavericks had a total of seven players record at least a point on the score sheet. The Mavericks out dug the Cougars 79 to 56.
The Mavericks will be on the road again next week with matches at CSU-Pueblo on Oct. 3
rd at 7 pm and Western State Colorado on Oct. 4
th at 7PM. The Mavs return home for a seven game home stand starting Oct. 10
th.
