GRAND JUNCTION, Colorado - The Colorado Mesa men's soccer team took down the Colorado School of Mines in dramatic fashion on Friday night in front of over 400 fans. Maverick
Roy Abergil scored on penalty shot in overtime to give Colorado Mesa their first victory in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference this season.
It was a physical game from the start with both teams receiving yellow cards,
Blake Carlson for the Mavs and Mathew Alemann for the Orediggers, at the 6:21 mark of the first period.
Mines was able to quickly convert their plays to shots outshooting the Mavs five to three. Four saves in the period for
Micah Conrads helped keep the score notched at zero.
The Mavericks came out strong in the second period with a header by
Alan Hernandez that went just wide. Mines started the second period very physical with six fouls in the first four minutes of the period.
At the 65:10 mark of the game, Colorado Mesa's
Tim Hofer responded to the physicality of the game and was given a yellow card.
With the time of possession for each team about even, the Mavericks outshot the Orediggers seven to six in the half. Colorado School of Mines would be given to more yellows in the period but none but as crucial as the yellow given at the end of regulation time. Just as the clock was winding down the Orediggers Mathew Aleman made a hard play on the Mavericks
Nestor Escobar with the two players ending up in the chain linked fence near the Mavericks goal, giving him his second yellow card of the night. The yellow turned into red ejecting him from the game.
With the score still tied at zero, the Orediggers were forced to play the overtime period a man short due to Alemann's red card. Through the first five minutes of overtime neither team could pose much of threat.
At the 96:28 mark of the match, Colorado Mesa's
Roy Abergil was awarded a penalty shot and he did not fail to take advantage of his opportunity burying the shot to give the Mavericks the one nil victory.
Micah Conrads picked up his second shutout and victory on the season with his eight saves in the game.
Alan Hernandez led the way with four shots and one shot on goal.
Roy Abergil picked up his team leading third goal of the season on the game-winning penalty kick.
The Mavericks were outshot in the game 12 to 11, but had 10 corner kicks and allowed just four on the night. There were 21 total fouls on the night with the Orediggers committing 13 and the Mavericks just eight.
