Football Opens RMAC Play

Colorado Mesa will open play in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Saturday, Sept. 20 at Adams State. The Grizzlies defeated the Mavericks 19-17 last season. 

Series
Adams State was won eight of the last 12 meetings against Colorado Mesa. The last win for the Mavericks was a 20-13 victory in 2011. 

Safeties
Colorado Mesa recorded two safeties at Texas A&M - Kingsville. Marcus Cross record a safety in the first quarter, and Luke Mandic recorded one in the third quarter. The last game that the Mavericks tallied a safety was Sept. 8, 2010 when Nainoa Campbell had one against Neb.-Kearney. 

Kick Returns
This weeks match-up will feature the top-two kick return teams in the RMAC. Adams State is averaging a league-high 35.9 yards per return and Colorado Mesa is averaging 35.5 yards. The two schools are the only two in the RMAC averaging more than 30 yards.

Interception Streak Ends
The Mavericks failed to record an interception against Texas A&M-Kingsville ending its streak of 13 consecutive game with an interception.
Defend the Pass
Colorado Mesa ranks second in the RMAC in pass defense allowing only 205.5 yards per game. CSU-Pueblo leads the league at 177.0 yards per game. 

Protect the House
The Mavericks have done a good job protecting the end zone. CMU ranks second in the RMAC in red zone defense at 72.7-percent. Opponents have scored on 8-of-11 trips inside the red zone. Western State tops the league at 63.6-percent. 

Turnovers
Colorado Mesa is tied for the league lead with CSU-Pueblo in turnover margin at +4. 
Opponents Penalties
CMU's opponents are averaging 108.0 yards of penalties per game, third most in the RMAC. 

Change at Running Back
Junior DJ Hubbard earned his first start of the season at running back replacing Ricky Trinidad who was injured in the game against Dixie State. Hubbard rushed for a game-high 126 yards, averaging 7.4 yards per carry. The Phoenix, Ariz., native ranks second in the league in all purpose yards (195.5 ypg) and third in rushing yards at 93.0 per game. 

Scoring
Freshman kicker Ryan Sheehan leads all Mavericks with 16 points this season. The Chandler, Ariz., native has kicked four field goals and four extra points this season. Overall nine different players have scored this season for CMU. 

Another Scoring Note
CMU has scored 28 of its 58 points this season on defense or special teams.
