Football Falls to Javelinas

KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Colorado Mesa University football team held Texas A&M-Kingsville to just 294 yards of total offense, but the Mavericks fell to the Javelinas 17-14 Saturday (Sept. 13).
The Mavericks wasted no time putting points on the board thanks to a nine play 53 yard drive that culminated with a 34-yard field goal by Ryan Sheehan.
The Javelinas answered with a touchdown on their first play from scrimmage when quarterback Trey Mitchell ran 67-yards for the score. Mitchell would throw for just 72 yards on 9-of-14 attempts, but ran for a team-high 100 yards.
The CMU defense stopped the Javelinas second drive when Marcus Cross tackled quarterback Trey Mitchell in the end zone for a safety.
Mitchell redeemed himself with his second rushing touchdown of the quarter with less than one remaining in the first quarter to give Kingsville a 14-5 lead.
Aric Kaiser completed a 39-yard pass to DJ Hubbard and then Kaiser ran for a two-yard touchdown two plays later with less than five minutes remaining in the half. Hubbard would finish with 126 yards rushing in addition to his 52 yards receiving.
Kingsville would add to its 14-12 halftime lead with a 28-yard field goal at 10:22 of the third quarter.
The final score of the game was by Luke Mandic who tallied CMU's second safety of the game at the 3:10 mark of the third quarter.
Mesa and Kingsville continued to excel on kick-off returns after entering the contest ranked second and fourth in Div. II. The Mavs averaged 50 yards a return while the Javelinas averaged 56 yards.
Both teams struggled holding onto the ball fumbling a combined 12 times, but each team only lost two fumbles a piece.
Aric Kaiser started at quarterback for the Mavericks and completed 8-of-17 passes for 111 yards. Andrew Cota finished 8-of-11 passing for 93 yards.
Ian Juede caught a game-high nine passes for a game-high 87 yards.
Colorado Mesa (1-1) will open Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play Sept. 20th at Adams State.
