Box Score GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. –
Derrick Garcia delivered a walk-off single to right field to cap Colorado Mesa's comeback victory over the New Mexico Highlands Cowboys 9-8 on Thursday evening at Suplizio Field. The Mavericks trailed 8-0 after the first six innings of play but tallied two runs in the seventh, six in the eighth and one in the ninth for the win.
Garcia finished the game 3-for-5 with two runs scored and four runs driven in. The Lakewood, California native got the Maverick rally started with a two-run home run that hit the left field foul pole in the bottom of the seventh inning.
He not only saved the Mavericks with his bat but with his glove as well.
In the top of the ninth inning and runners on first and second, Cowboy Jordan Goliat hit a ball that looked like it was going up the middle but Garcia laid out, gloved the ball and flipped it to shortstop
Nate Robertson to end the threat.
Robertson,
Austin Kaiser,
Jordan Liester, and
Garrett Woodward all finished with two hits.
Garrett Carpenter picked up his first win of the season in relief. Carpenter fanned two batters and got the ground out to Garcia for his three outs in the game.
New Mexico Highlands' Blake Harrison pitched well but earned the no decision. Harrison worked seven innings and allowed six runs on eight hits, walked one and struck out three.
A crowd of 1,341 saw the Mavericks keep their home record unblemished at a perfect 28-0.
It was only the second time all season where Colorado Mesa trailed after six innings and came from behind and won.
Colorado Mesa will face the team that defeated them in the semifinals of last season's South Central Regional in the St. Edward's Hilltoppers. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30pm.
St. Edward's fell to Texas A&M-Kingsville 9-2 earlier in the day.
