Box Score LAS VEGAS, N.M. – Colorado Mesa hammered out 22 hits in a 20-4 win over the New Mexico Highlands Cowboys on getaway day at Brandt Field. The Mavericks were able to salvage a series split with the Cowboys with the win and maintains a one and a half game lead on them.
The Mavericks scored in every inning except three. They put up big run totals in the third, sixth, and eighth innings scoring four or more in those innings.
Sergio Valenzuela led the Mavericks all weekend long. Valenzuela collected four more hits today and scored four runs from the leadoff spot in the order.
Second baseman
Derrick Garcia went 4-for-5 with four runs scored and three runs driven in. All of Garcia's hits went for extra bases today as he finished with three doubles and a homerun.
Senior
Austin Kaiser continued to torment opposing teams. Kaiser finished 4-for-6 with two doubles, his team-leading fourth homerun, three runs scored and six runs driven in. He is batting .494 on the season with eight doubles, four homeruns and 23 runs driven in.
The combo of
Kyle Davis and
Garrett Carpenter combined to keep the Cowboys bats at bay. Davis went five innings and allowed four runs on eight hits, walked three and struck out four to earn his third win of the season.
Carpenter pitched the final four innings and allowed just three hits while striking out two. He earned his second save of the season.
The Mavericks will play Metro State and CSU-Pueblo on Tuesday in non-conference games in Denver. First pitch with Metro State is slated for 12:00pm.
