SPEARFISH, S.D. – Black Hills State scored nine points in the second overtime period and the visiting No. 14 Colorado Mesa Mavericks could not recover in a 86-81 loss in double overtime at the Donald E. Young Center. The Mavericks record falls to 4-2 on the season and 1-1 in the RMAC.
Shanna Halalilo led all scorers with 22 points off the bench for Colorado Mesa. Halalilo, who played for Black Hills State a year ago, had 13 points in the first half and finished 7-of-14 from the field and 3-of-4 from beyond the arc.
The biggest discrepancy in the game came at the free-throw line where the Yellowjackets were 27-of-32 in the game and 13-of-14 in the overtime periods. The Mavericks were 21-of-25 in the game and just 5-of-5 in the overtimes.
Black Hills State had six players reach double digits in scoring led by Dakota Barrie's 19 points. The Yellowjackets finished the game 24-of-67 (36 percent) from the field and 11-of-23 from three-point range (48 percent).
The Mavericks shot 37 percent (27-of-73) from the field but just 22 percent (6-of-27) from beyond the three-point line.
Erika Musante had her first double-double of her career, finishing with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Saane Lo'amanu finished with 11 points and eight rebounds.
The Mavericks will return home to face New Mexico Highlands and Western New Mexico next weekend at Brownson Arena.
