LIVE VIDEOWEEKEND RECAPColorado Mesa closed out the regular season with a pair of wins and extended their winning streak to 12.Â
On Friday, the Mavericks defeated MSU Denver 2-1 behind an
Alan Hernandez goal in the 72nd minute.
In the regular season finale, CMU erupted for four goals against the now No. 25 team in the country in Regis with a 4-1 win.
RMAC CHAMPSColorado Mesa secured the RMAC regular season championship back on October 26. It is the first time in the program's history they have won the regular season championship and now hold both the regular season and tournament trophies at the same time. They will have a shot at keeping both for the year this weekend as they host the RMAC Tournament.
ALL-RMAC SELECTIONSThe Mavericks received six selections to the All-RMAC team that was released on Tuesday. Junior defender
Blake Carlson was named the Defensive Player of the Year and was joined by
Roy Abergil on the first team.
Stan Schrock,
Austin Jex,
Micah Conrads and
Nestor Escobar were all named to the second team.
DISHING IT OUTOver the weekend,
Nestor Escobar became the all-time leader in assists at Colorado Mesa. His assist on
Roy Abergil's goal against MSU Denver gave him 15 in his career, one more than his brother Marco. He has seven assists this season which ties him for the single-season mark with his brother as well.
OCTOBER GOALSThe Mavericks surrendered just two goals in the month of October. Both goals happened to come at the hands of the MSU Denver Roadrunners on Oct. 4 and Oct. 31. The goal scored by the Roadrunners on Oct. 31 ended a streak of seven consecutive shutouts by the Mavericks.
IN THE GAMESeniors
Alan Hernandez and
Stevie Palma have played in a lot of matches in their CMU careers. Hernandez and Palma have played in the most games ever at 75. They eclipsed the old mark set by
Marco Escobar from 2010-2013 and Mitchell Reid from 2007-10.
NCAA REGIONAL POLLThe Mavericks remain in the top position in the NCAA South Central Region poll. The only change from a week ago came in the No. 5 spot where Colorado Mines moved ahead of MSU Denver. The top three teams advance to the NCAA Tournament.
NSCAA POLLColorado Mesa moved up two spots to No. 9 after the two wins last weekend. The No. 9 ranking is the highest ranking this season and all-time for Colorado Mesa. They remained No. 1 in the South Central region poll.
NATIONAL RANKINGSThe Mavericks continue to be among the nation's best in defense this season. The team ranks third in shutout percentage (.061), fifth in save percentage (.865) and team goals against average (0.54).
Micah Conrads ranks ninth in the country in save percentage at .837.
TOURNAMENT TIMEAll thats left in the men's soccer season is tournaments and its simple, win and you move on, lose and you are out. Colorado Mesa will more than likely get into the NCAA Tournament even if they should happen to lose in the RMAC Tournament.Â
2013 RMAC TOURNAMENT CHAMPSThe Mavericks won their first-ever RMAC Tournament last season, defeating the Regis Rangers 2-1 in double overtime.
Oliver Querin booted in the game-winning goal in the second overtime period and was named to the all-tournament team.
NEXT UPThe Mavericks will await the word from the NCAA on whether or not they have made the Tournament field. If they are the No. 1 seed, they will have next week off and will travel to a West Region site for the region championship match. If they are the No. 2 or No. 3 seed they will play either Saturday or Sunday at the site of the No. 2 seed.
