SILVER CITY, N.M. - The No. 13 Colorado Mesa volleyball team won their 13
th straight match tonight (Nov. 1) when they tamed the Western New Mexico Mustangs in three sets.
The Mavericks jumped out to the early 2-0 lead in the first set thanks to back-to-back kills by
Melissa Hess. CMU would maintain the advantage throughout the game even finding themselves up by seven when a blast by
Abby Ney put the score at 17-10. Two straight errors by Western Mexico would put the game at set point and
Melissa Hess's one timer would finish it for the 25-17 win.
Once again, Colorado Mesa took the first two points of the second set, but the Mustangs fought back to even the score. CMU held the lead throughout the early part of the game, but Western New Mexico would stay in it trailing by two points at the most. It wasn't until a service error by the Mustangs that put the score at 13-11 in favor of the Mavs that the scoring became a one-sided event.
Abby Ney would have two kills and the Mustangs would tally eight errors in a 10 point run that would put CMU up 23-11. Colorado Mesa went on to take the set by an astonishing 12 points (25-13).
Needing to win the third set to give the Mavs their 18
th straight set victory, CMU took 12 of the first 17 points, including the first five of the game. Two straight blasts from
Casey Ball would put Colorado Mesa up 18-9. With the Mavericks up 20-12, CMU would take the next four points to put them at match point. A couple errors by Colorado Mesa and a service ace by the Mustangs would bring the score to 24-15 before
Christian Otzen's powerful shot concluded the match.
The Mavericks would have six service aces on the night with
Casey Ball recording two and
Kricket Adleman,
Jordyn Moody,
Abby Ney and
Tiffany Petersen each having one.
Casey Ball would lead the way offensively with 15 kills and a .379 hit percentage.
Melissa Hess also had a night when she hit .579 with 12 kills.
Jordyn Moody recorded 39 assists, while
Tiffany Petersen tallied a team-high 13 digs. CMU would outhit the Mustangs .355 to .038.
Colorado Mesa will wrap up the regular season on the road with matches at Fort Lewis (Nov. 6) at 7 pm and Adams State (11/7) at 7 pm before returning home to host the first round of the RMAC Tournament on Nov. 11 at 7 pm.Â
