GRAND JUNCTION, Colorado –
Kevin Escobar scored a pair of goals and Colorado Mesa held on in the final minutes to secure a 2-1 victory over 12
th ranked MSU Denver on Friday evening at Walker Field.
Escobar's first goal came at the 37
th minute in the first half and was assisted by his brother Nestor. The goal was Kevin's first of the season and it was also the first goal of the opening half this season for Colorado Mesa.
It was also the first lead the Mavericks have had at halftime this season.
Escobar's second goal of the night came within the first ten minutes of the second half. Junior
Charlie Dukes crossed in a ball which Escobar took and scored on the right side of the goal.
Colorado Mesa rested with a two goal lead for the next 16 minutes until Roadrunner Josh Belfrage scored his sixth goal of the season on a header in the box that got over the outstretched arms of Maverick goalkeeper
Brandyn Bumpas.
CMU held on for the lead in the final 20 minutes of the match.
Bumpas made two saves in the match and faced a total of eight shots.
Colorado Mesa improved to 6-2-1 on the season and 4-0 in night matches this season. They moved to 4-1-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
The Mavericks will continue their home stand with a match on Sunday afternoon at 1:00pm at Walker Field.
