Box Score SILVER CITY, N.M. – The Colorado Mesa University football team scored two touchdowns in the final two minutes to defeat Western New Mexico 45-35 Saturday (Oct. 18).
The first quarter featured a touchdown by both teams. Daryl Hakwins then scored his second touchdown of the contest with a five-yard run to cap an 11-play 64-yard drive five seconds into the second quarter.
Virnel Moon extended the CMU to its largest of the game, 21-7, with a 29-yard touchdown catch from Andrew Coda at 9:43 of the second quarter. Moon led the Mavericks with 58 yards receiving on the day.
The Mustangs would rally with two receiving touchdowns to enter halftime tied at 21.
Ryan Sheehan notched the lone score of the third quarter with a 27-yard kick to take the lead back for CMU 24-21.
The fourth quarter featured five touchdowns and four lead changes.
Shiane Tupua scored on a one yard run to give WNMU its first lead of the contest 28-24.
Hawkins found the endzone for the third time for CMU with a 20-yard run with 6:32 remaining. Hawkins ran for a team-high 67 yards on 12 carries (5.6 ypc).
Mitch Glassman completed his fourth touchdown pass of the game with 3:46 remaining to complete the scoring for Western New Mexico. Glassman completed 19-of-38 passes for 290 yards for the Mustangs.
Turmour Battle gave CMU the lead for good after returning a blocked punt 43-yards with 1:40 remaining.
Marcus Cross completed the scoring for Mesa four plays later with a 30-yard interception return for a touchdown with 71 seconds remaining. The pick six was the first for the
Mavericks since 2012. Cross led the Maverick defense with two interceptions and a game-high 7.5 tackles.
Andrew Cota completed 20-of-35 passes for 210 yards and added 46 with his feet for Colorado Mesa.
Western New Mexico finished with 475 yards of total offense to 409 yards for Colorado Mesa.
The Mustangs won the passing battle 290 to 214, but the Mavericks held the edge in rushing 195-185.
Each team scored 14 points off of two interceptions in the game.
CMU (5-2, 4-1) will host rival Fort Lewis for Homecoming Oct. 25.
