Mavs Rope the Cowgirls

Box Score The Colorado Mesa University volleyball team took down the New Mexico Highland Cowgirls in straight sets Friday (Oct. 11).

CMU jumped out to an early lead in the first set on a kill by Casey Ball before the Cowgirls would take the next two points and the lead. Abby Ney would help tie things up at two and an attack error by New Mexico Highlands would put the Mavs back on top. From that point on Colorado Mesa took control of the game and would never let the Cowgirls think they had a chance. Late in the set, CMU would go on a four point run to out the score at 18-10 in favor of the Mavericks. An attack error by New Mexico Highlands at game point gave CMU the 25-14 win. Erin Perez hit .444 in the set with four kills and three digs. Tiffany Petersen added six digs. Abby Ney hit .286 with four kills. As a team Colorado Mesa hit .189 and held the Cowgirls to -.071.

Colorado Mesa was not going to have a letdown in the middle set like it did the night before. They came out in the second set taking the first three points. The Mavericks took their largest lead of the game when a kill by Melissa Hess put CMU up 8-2. New Mexico Highlands would rally back late in the set to bring them within one. A blast from Audrey Steinkirchner finished the game giving the Mavs the 25-21 victory. CMU hit .311 in the set.  Abby Ney led the way hitting .538 with nine kills. Melissa Hess, Casey Ball and Erin Perez each had six kills with Perez hitting .462.  Jordyn Moody had 26 assists. Tiffany Peterson recorded 11 digs in the game.

Needing one more set victory to finish off the Cowgirls, the Mavericks seized the lead early and the Cowgirls could catch up. Halfway through the match Colorado Mesa found themselves leading 14-9. With the fans on their feet waiting for match point, Abby Ney would end it with a strong kill.

Casey Ball posted her second double-double (12 kills and 15 digs) of the weekend.  Melissa Hess also had a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs. Abby Ney had 10 kills and hit .412. Tiffany Peterson had a team-high 17 digs.  CMU hit .294 while limiting New Mexico Highlands to .135. The Mavericks had 48 kills on the night.

CMU (15-3, 10-1) will be back at home on Tuesday (Oct. 14)when it hosts Fort Lewis at 7 pm.
