Mavs Survive In Five

Box Score In what was a bit of a rough night for the Mavericks, they staged a come from behind victory over Western New Mexico to keep themselves atop the RMAC standings.

CMU came out of the blocks strong with a kill by Melissa Hess to win the first point of the set for Colorado Mesa. The Mustangs would win the next point to tie the game up early. Another kill by Melissa Hess would give the Mavs the early 2-1 the advantage and they would never relinquish the lead. The Mavericks would find themselves up by 7 points in the match before the Mustangs would find a way to tie it up at 22. A game deciding kill by Abby Ney would put the Mavs up by one before they ran away with the victory 25-22
Melissa Hess hit .556 in the set with 5 kills. Jordyn Moody recorded 16 assists. Tiffany Peterson had 6 digs for the set. The Mavericks hit .238 while keeping the Mustangs at .156.

The second set was a rough one for the Mavericks. The Mustangs took the early lead and the Mavs could never sustain the pace to keep up. Throughout the set, Colorado Mesa would repeatedly make big errors. CMU had 12 attack errors, one service error, and one blocking error. The Mavs did have more kills then the Mustangs with 12. Erin Perez led the way with 6 kills while hitting .250. The Mavericks would lose the set by a score of 25-21.

The third set was another one in which the Mavericks looked a bit out of sync. They started out strong winning the first three points before allowing the Mustangs to tie the game up at 5. An attack error by the Colorado Mesa would give the Western New Mexico the lead and they would hold onto it throughout the rest of the set winning 25-19. CMU was outhit in the game .176 to .020. The Mustangs also recorded more digs then the Mavericks 21 to 19.

The fourth and fifth set were the Mavericks we have become accustomed to seeing this season. The Mavericks came out determined to put the past two sets in the past.

The fourth set was one of determination and heart for the Mavericks. CMU took the lead early and never let the Mustangs in the set winning 25-17.  Colorado Mesa hit .200 in the set, while limiting the Mustangs to hit .000. Melissa Hess and Casey Ball each had 4 kills. Ali Svorinic had 15 assists.

With the Mavericks needing to win the fifth set in order to complete their comeback, Colorado Mesa would jump put to the early 3-0 lead. An attack error by the Mustangs would give CMU the 11-2 lead. A bad set by Western New Mexico would give Colorado Mesa the 15-6 win and match win.

The Mavericks hit .132 on the night and kept the Mustangs at .090. Melissa Hess and Casey Ball each had 15 kills. Ball had another double-double as she has recorded 17 digs. Jordyn Moody had 30 assists, while Ali Svorinic chipped in with 26 of her own. Erin Perez had 22 kills. The Mavericks had 86 digs while the Mustangs only had 68.

The Mavericks will stay at home and take on New Mexico Highlands Saturday October 11th at 5 PM.
