Joe Kiely made a lay-up as time expired to lift the Colorado Mesa men's basketball team to an 83-82 win over UC-Colorado Springs Friday (Jan. 10) at Brownson Arena. The win snaps the Mavericks three game losing streak and lifts CMU to 8-6 overall and 6-4 in the RMAC.
The Mountain Lions lead grew to a game-high 10 points with eight minutes remaining. The Mavericks would claw back tying the game at 74 with a lay-up by junior
Jon Orr with four minutes remaining. Sophomore
Ryan Stephan handed CMU its first lead of the contest with a lay-up, one of 28 points in the paint for the Mavericks, with 1:32 remaining. Stephan followed up with another lay-up, but UCCS countered with back-to-back lay-ups. With five seconds remaining, the Mavericks inbounded the ball to Kiely, who sprinted the length of the court, for the game-winning bucket.
Kiely, who shot 0-10 the night before, finished with 14 points and a career-tying seven assists.
Stephan scored a career-high 26 points shooting 9-of-12 from the field and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
For the first time this season, all five Maverick starters finished in double figures.
Jon Orr finished with 12 points and was one rebound shy of a double-double. Junior
Landon Vermeer finished with 11, and fellow junior Mike Melillo chipped in 10.
The Mavericks tallied 20 assists on 27 field goals. The 20 assists tied their season-high.
CMU made more free throws (23) than UCCS attempted (20).
Derrick White led the Mountain Lions with 26 points.
Colorado Mesa will play a single game next week at Western State Saturday (Jan. 18).
