SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Colorado Mesa volleyball team split a pair of matches today (Sept. 7) in Texas. The Mavericks fell 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-19) to Angelo State and defeated Tarleton State 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-23).
"Overall this was a great weekend for us," said head coach Dave Fleming.
The Mavericks struggled offensively against ASU hitting .093 for the match. Angelo also tallied eight blocks, including six from Maddie Hurth.
Melissa Hess led CMU with nine kills, and Sunni Rae Baird tallied a match-high 24 digs.
The Rambelles used the serving game to their advantage finishing with a 7-0 edge in service aces. CMU also had eight service errors in the match.
In the final match of the weekend, the Mavericks dug 60 balls in the 3-0 victory over Tarleton State.
Sunni Rae Baird led CMU with a match-high 17 digs with Melissa Perez and Christian added 12 and 11 respectively. The pair also contributed a combined 22 kills.
Jordyn Moody finished with 40 of the team's 44 assists in the match.
CMU hit .226 and held TSU to .109.
"We had a very balanced attack against Tarleton and that led us to the win," said Fleming. "Erin (Perez), Christian (Otzen) and Audrey (Steinkirchner) all played great in the win today."
CMU (3-1) will play four matches at the New Mexico Highlands Tournament next weekend (Sept. 13-14).
