Schnetzler, Mavericks Post Second Straight Shutout

Box Score

DENVER, Colo. – Colorado Mesa women's soccer team tallied two first half goals and picked up another in the second half en route to a 3-0 win over the Regis Rangers at Regis Match Pitch.

"We were very efficient with our finishing and played a great defensive game against a strong Regis side that is very dangerous in the final third," Maverick coach Erin Sharpe said.

The Mavericks jumped on the board early in the match when Ashley Wallace scored her first goal of the season in the fifth minute. Wallace took a long pass from Leilani Wiernicki and banked one in off the Ranger goalkeeper to give CMU the 1-0 lead.

In the 31st minute, Kendra Penchoff gave Colorado Mesa a 2-0 lead on Regis. Penchoff took a pass from Veronica Rodriguez and shot from 18 yards out, finding the back of the net. The goal was Penchoff's first of her collegiate career.

Freshman Marie Dreher picked up the Mavericks final goal of the afternoon in the 70th minute of the match. Dreher scored her first collegiate goal after taking a pass and fired, finding the net over the goalkeeper.

Junior Sarah Schnetzler picked up the shutout in goal for CMU. Schnetzler made seven saves in the match.

"We're very pleased with not only the three goal effort but with our defensive effort that helped keep the clean sheet," Sharpe added.

The win was the first over Regis since the Mavericks upset them in Denver on November 4, 2011. Colorado Mesa defeated the 16th ranked Rangers 1-0 to send them to the RMAC Tournament Championship Match.

The Mavericks will return home for a pair of home matches next weekend. On Friday, they will take one the Western State Colorado Mountaineers at 7pm from Walker Field.
