Volleyball Victorious in Home Opener

Box Score GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa volleyball team did not disappoint the 786 screaming fans at Brownson Arena Tuesday (Sept. 24) night as they defeated Fort Lewis 3-1 in the home opener for the Mavericks. CMU improves to 9-2 overall and 2-1 in the RMAC, and FLC falls to 1-10 overall and 1-2 in league play.

The Mavericks hit a match-low .091 in the opening set which the Skyhawks won 25-18.

"I felt that the crowd might have gotten us too excited," said head coach Dave Fleming.

The Mavericks relaxed in the second set and their hitting percentage improved to .250 with 14 kills.

The third set was when CMU really took control of the match hitting .296. Behind the serving strength of Kricket Adleman the Mavs strung together nine consecutive points to take a 17-7 lead. The set would end on a four point run by CMU.

The fourth set would feature another spectacular run by the Mavs, this one consisting of 12 points. CMU hit a match-high .343.

Melissa Hess finished with a match-high 17 kills and hit .519 for the Mavericks. Christian Otzen added 13 kills for CMU who finished with a 56-39 edge in total kills over FLC.

Jordyn Moody tallied 48 of CMU's 55 assists and added seven digs and three kills.

Sunni Rae Baird had a match-high 20 digs.

CMU enjoyed a strong advantage in both assists, 55-34, and digs, 51-40.

Hannah Starbuck and Heather Danny each finished with a team-high 11 kills for Fort Lewis.

Mesa will play at Western New Mexico Saturday (Sept. 28).
