Box Score PUEBLO, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa volleyball team dropped a tough 3-2 loss at CSU-Pueblo Saturday (Sept. 21) despite leading in nearly every statistical category. The Mavs are now 8-2 overall and 1-1 in league play.
CMU finished with advantages in kills (69-48), attack percentage (.179-.112), assists (62-44), service aces (4-2) and digs (77-70). Pueblo held a 17.5-7.0 edge in blocks.
"All the credit goes to CSUP. They did exactly what they needed to do to win," said head coach
Dave Fleming. "We took them for granted after our 3-0 win on Friday. They out-clawed and out-fought us. I hope we learned our lesson as we move on to another tough match on Tuesday."
Hitting percentage played a large part in the match as the team that hit better in each set came away with the win.
Mesa hit .371 in both the first and third sets for the win, while Pueblo hit .125, .128 and .200 to win the other three.
Christian Otzen tallied 15 kills and 15 digs to finish with a double-double for CMU.
Abby Ney added a team-high 16 kills, and
Melissa Hess and
Casey Ball combined for 23 kills.
Sunni Rae Baird finished with a match-high 23 digs, and
Jordyn Moody recorded 53 of the Maverick's 62 assists.
Brianna Bryant led the Thunderwolves with a match-high 17 kills.
The volleyball team will make its home debut Tuesday (Sept. 24) against Fort Lewis.
