LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The Colorado Mesa volleyball team improved to 5-1 overall on the year after a pair of wins today (Sept. 13) in New Mexico. The Mavericks defeated St. Edwards and Eastern Mexico by identical 3-0 scores.

Dave Fleming praised the play of setter
Jordyn Moody. "Moody did a great job distributing the ball to all our hitters," said Fleming. "She did a good job of figuring out what was working and kept going there."
In the match against St. Edwards she recorded 40 assists on 49 of the team's kills. She followed up with 28 assists against Eastern New Mexico.
CMU's offense dominated in the match against St. Edwards hitting .289, including a match-high .359 in the second set to win 25-12. The Mav's also finished with a 57-43 edge in digs.
Christian Otzen tallied a double-double for CMU with 11 kills and 11 digs and two of the team's five aces.
Melissa Hess tallied 12 kills and a .429 hitting percentage.
Mesa relied on strong defensive play in the 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-20) win over Eastern New Mexico.
The Mav's finished with a 51-33 edge in digs and held ENMU to a .097 attack percentage. CMU hit .255.
Sunni Rae Baird and
Erin Perez finished with 18 and 10 digs respectively. Perez added eight kills, and Otzen finished with a team-high nine.
The team will wrap-up the weekend Saturday (Sept. 14) with a pair of matches against McMurry and Dixie State.
