The Colorado Mesa University baseball team continued its RMAC series with the Metro State Roadrunners on Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader at Auraria Field in Denver. The Mavericks won both ends of the doubleheader, winning by scores of 13-2 and 3-2 in extra innings. Colorado Mesa improved its record to 29-6 on the season and 23-2 in the RMAC while the Roadrunners fall to 13-19 on the year, 9-14 in the RMAC.
In game one of the doubleheader, the Mavericks scored five runs in the first and then piled on seven more in the second on their way to a 13-2 win. The Mavericks pounded out 14 hits including three extra base hits. Out of their 13 runs, only five were earned as the Roadrunners committed four costly errors.
Braden Box led a group of six Mavericks that had two hits in the game. Box finished the game 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and two runs driven in.
Senior
Matt Williams got the start on the mound and continued to pitch well this season. Williams allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits, walked two and struck out nine in a complete game effort. He is now 4-1 and has a 3.05 ERA on the season.
In the nightcap, it took nine innings but the Mavericks came away with a 3-2 victory over Metro State.
Nate Robertson singled in the top of the ninth bringing in
Braden Box with the game-winning run.
Robertson finished the game with two hits and stole his team-leading 18th base of the season.
The bullpen earned the win as a unit for the Mavericks. They pitched a combined 5.1 innings and allowed no runs on two hits, walked one and struck out three.
Dakota Behr picked up the win and
Aaron Corwin earned his first save of the season.
The series will conclude with a single nine inning game tomorrow from Auraria Field in Denver. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00pm.
