The Colorado Mesa University baseball team traveled to Denver this weekend to take on the Regis Rangers. The two team were originally scheduled to play a single game today but impending severe weather forced the teams to play an early doubleheader. A late rally and a shutout helped the Mavericks sweep the day and improve their record to 12-4 on the season and 6-0 in RMAC games. The win also boosted their win streak to eight games.
In the series opener, the Mavericks tallied four runs in the top of the ninth inning and held on late to win 6-5 over the Rangers.
Mitch Corwin's two-run singel knotted the game at 5-5 in the ninth and
Kennedy Kinkade's single through the left side gave the Mavericks the 6-5 advantage.
Cody Lahman picked up the win in relief of starter
Nolan Snell and
Garrett Carpenter picked up his fourth save of the season. Carpenter was able to pick off Ranger catcher Ty Overboe for the final out of the game.
Corwin paced the Mavericks offensively with a 2-for-5 game with three runs driven in.
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Mavericks scored the lone two runs of the game before the second inning was over in a 2-0 win. The game was a pitchers dual between the Rangers Steven Brault and the Mavericks
Matt Williams.
Williams won this battle pitching the complete-game shutout scattering six hits and striking out four. His counterpart pitched the complete game and allowed the two runs (one earned) on seven hits, walked one and struck out nine.
The win was Williams' first of the season.
Austin Kaiser had two hits for the Mavericks.
The series is scheduled to conclude tomorrow but may be pushed back to Sunday with nearly a foot of snow scheduled to fall in the Denver area tonight and tomorrow. Check back on cmumavericks.com
