The Colorado Mesa University baseball team traveled to Alamosa, CO for a four-game series with the Adams State Grizzlies at ASU Baseball Field. The game is the first between the two schools since 1976 in which the Grizzlies were victorious. Times have changed as the Mavericks pounded out 21 hits in a 21-2 win over Adams State in the series opener.
Colorado Mesa, ranked 11th in the latest Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll, had back-to-back five run innings in the third and fourth innings and then capped the day off with a four run seventh and a three in the ninth.
Colton Little provided the big blow in the third inning when he belted a first pitch grand slam to put the Mavericks ahead 6-1 at the time. Little finished the game 4-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs scored.
Jordan Moore-Leister and
Nate Robertson each had homeruns in the game. Moore-Leister's pinch-hit homer was a solo shot while Robertson's was a two run shot over the centerfield fence.
Senior righty
Nolan Snell got the start on the mound in the series opener. Snell, this past week's Rawlings/RMAC Pitcher of the Week, pitched seven innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits, walked two and struck out eight in the win. Snell improved his season record to 5-1.
Lefty
Andrew Malone pitched the final two innings and didnt allow a hit and struck out one.
The win pushes the Mavericks record to 20-5 on the season and 14-1 in the RMAC while the Grizzlies fell to 7-19 and 6-9 in RMAC games.
The series will continue tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 12:00pm from Alamosa.
