Colorado Mesa (17-8, 14-7 RMAC) lost to visiting Adams State University (18-7, 15-6 RMAC) in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action on Friday night 75-68, surrendering 52-second half points to the Grizzlies.
CMU led 35-23 at intermission with the help of a 16-2 run that saw a two point CMU lead (13-11) swell to a 16 point advantage (29-13) with 5:34 remaining in the half. CMU's largest lead of 18 points (35-17) shrunk to a 12-point halftime lead with the Grizzlies closing out the half with a 5-0 run.
Adams State opened the second half 17-5 run in the first four minutes and trailed by just 5 points (40-25) at the 16:15 mark. CMU did not relinquish the lead until back-to-back free throws gave ASU a 55-54 lead with 5:42 left in the game. CMU regained the lead moments later on a 3-pointer by Mike Melillo (57-55). ASU's next possession resulted in a layup, a CMU foul, and with the made free throw, the Grizzlies took the lead for good.
Jeff Hart finished with a team high 16 points. Colton Burgon had 13 points and seven rebounds. Mike Melillo had 12 points and six rebounds.
CMU shot 51 percent (25-49) from the floor, yet only connected on 13 of 23 free throws. ASU shot 43 percent (29-68) from the field and nearly matched the Mavs from the foul line with 13 of 24 made free throws. Adams out-rebounded Mesa 41-36.
Adams State was led by Kaimyn Pruitt's game high 22 points and 11 rebounds.
CMU will close out the regular season on Saturday night against Fort Lewis College. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
