Mavs Win Overtime Thriller over Yellow Jackets 69-66

Colorado Mesa (15-5, 12-4 RMAC) defeated visiting Black Hills State University (5-15, 4-12 RMAC) in overtime on Friday night 69-66, holding off the Yellow Jackets by scoring the final five points in the overtime period.

Clay Kame's only two points of the night came in the final five-seconds of the contest, sinking two free throws to give the Mavericks a three point advantage. Kame stole the ball in the final second of regulation, denying the Yellow Jackets a last second shot, sending the game into overtime.

CMU led 29-28 at intermission and in the second half the lead changed hands 11 times with six ties. CMU's largest lead of five points (38-33) came early in the second half (15:50). Black Hills largest lead was three points at the 10-minute mark.

The Yellow Jackets took a one-point lead (57-56) with 3:48 left in regulation, sinking two foul shots. A layup by Jeff Hart pushed CMU up by one (58-56). After a steal and dunk by Black Hills State (59-58), CMU tied the game at 59-59 on Colton Burgon's free throw. The two teams combined for four shots in the final 1:56, all falling short, sending the game into overtime.

In the five minute session CMU outscored BHSU 10-7 with two ties and five lead changes. After a jumper by the Jackets, Daniel Estes' trey gave CMU a 62-61 lead. BHSU took the lead by one on a jumper (63-62) before CMU grabbed the lead back, 64-63, on Colton Burgon's free throws. With 1:28 remaining BHSU's 3-pointer pushed the Jacket lead to 66-64. Following a block and rebound by Clay Kame, Colton Burgon' layup and one (made free throw) gave CMU a 67-66 lead with 9-seconds left. A costly turnover by the Yellow Jackets gave CMU the ball at the five-second mark. BHS fouled Kame who iced the game at the free throw line.

Colton Burgon finished with a double-double; 17 points and 10 rebounds. Burgon was 7 of 11 from the foul line and scored five of the Mavs' 10 overtime points. Jeff Hart recorded 16 points, Mike Melillo had 11 points and Daniel Estes finished with 10 points.

CMU will host Chadron State on Saturday night in Brownson Arena. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
