Mavericks Win Fourth Straight

Box Score GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Landon Vermeer scored with one second remaining to lift the Colorado Mesa men's basketball team to a 75-73 win over Adams State Saturday (Dec. 21). The win was the fourth straight for the Mavericks who have won six of their last seven games.

Vermeer was a major factor in the Mavericks second half comeback. After trailing 41-32 at the half, Mesa opened the second half on a 16-8 run that included back-to-back 3-pointers by Vermeer. The Littleton, Colo., native added two more from behind the arc in the half to finish with 20 points, tying his career-high.

CMU would lead by as many as six with under three minutes remaining. ASU's  Juwann Buchanan tied the game at 73 with a 3-pointer with 28 seconds remaining. Joe Kiely's lay-up attempt was no good but the Mavericks retained possession after the ball went out of bounds. Vermeer made his lay-up with one second remaining and Adam's desperation shot from half court was unsuccessful.

Sophomore Ryan Stephan finished with a team-high 21 points for the second straight night shooting 8-of-10 from the field. The Lakewood, Colo., native also grabbed 10 rebounds.

Fellow sophomore Joe Kiely was the third Maverick in double digits with 16 points. The Columbia, Md., native also tallied five assists.

Juwann Buchanan, who entered the contest with two points on the season, finished with a game-high 22 to lead the Grizzlies. Lee Mark was the only other ASU player in double digits with 16.

CMU enters the holiday break 7-3 overall and 5-1 in league play. The Mavericks will play at Colorado Christian Jan. 3.
