Men's Basketball Tips Off at Dixie State

Colorado Mesa will open the season with a pair of games at the Dixie State Classic Nov. 8-9. The Mavericks will face the host Dixie State Friday (Nov. 8) and California Baptist Saturday (Nov. 9). 
Coach Shantz
Head coach Andy Shantz begins his first season as head coach at Colorado Mesa after serving as a long time assistant for the Mavericks. Shantz replaces Jim Heaps who accepted an administrative position in the athletic department.  
Top-Scorer
Junior Mike Melillo is the top-returning scorer for the Mavericks. Last season the Boulder, Colo., native averaged 10.5 points per game and started all 26 games that he appeared in. He also averaged 5.9 rebounds per game, second most on the team.
Deep Threat
Junior Landon Vermeer finished fourth on the team in scoring last season averaging 7.2 points per game. The Littleton, Colo., native led the team in 3-pointers (33) and 3-point shooting percentage (.478). 
Sharing the Ball
Senior Clayton Kame returns for his final season in a Maverick uniform. The local product from Grand Junction led the team in assists with 75 and averaged 4.0 points per game. 
Assisting Others
Colorado Mesa led the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference in assists in 2012-13 averaging 15.3 per game. 
Defense
CMU finished in the top-three in the RMAC last season in three different defensive statistics. The Mavericks were second in scoring defense (66.9 ppg) and 3-point field goal defense (.330). Mesa finished third in field goal percentage defense (.417). 
New Squad
Out of the 17 players on this year's team, 10 are upper classmen. However only seven of the 17 players on this year's squad have game time experience for the Mavericks. 
Last Time Out
Three CMU players finished in double figures in a 94-63 loss to No. 1 Metro State in the semifinals of the RMAC Tournament. 
Looking Ahead
Colorado Mesa will play at BYU Nov. 16 as part of the College Basketball Experience Hall of Fame Classic.
