GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. –
Ashley Wallace and
Tayler Franklin each tallied a goal for Colorado Mesa in en route to a 2-0 win over Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference foe Western State Colorado.
"I am very pleased with the result tonight because Western State is very dangerous on the attack. Our defensive tenacity was very strong and it paid off for us," Maverick coach Erin Sharpe said about the win.
The Mavericks first goal came in the 18
th minute when redshirt sophomore
Ashley Wallace scored her second goal of the season. Wallace's goal came off a
Tayler Franklin corner kick that defender Leilani Weirnicki received and passed to Wallace who found the right side of the goal.
Colorado Mesa picked up its insurance goal in the second half at the 63:11 mark.
Tayler Franklin scored her team-leading third goal of the season off a Leilani Weirnicki shot that hit the crossbar and deflected right to Franklin who found the left side.
Sarah Schnetzler picked up her third consecutive shutout in goal. Schnetzler made two saves and faced six total shots.
Colorado Mesa is currently riding a three-match win streak and improved their record to 4-5-0 on the season and 3-2-0 in the RMAC while Western State drops to 4-4-1, 1-3-1 in RMAC matches.
The Mavericks will take on a familiar foe in the UCCS Mountain Lions on Sunday at 3pm from Walker Field. In the last four meetings between the two teams, all four matches have gone to overtime.
"It's a massive game for us. They are sitting near the top of the standings and there is a history of close games with them."
