Burneo Lifts Mavericks Over Grizzlies

Box Score GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Sam Burneo's goal with 4:25 to play led the Colorado Mesa Maverick women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over the Adams State Grizzlies in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference match.

The Mavericks tallied the first goal of the match in the 15th minute. Monica Carlos scored her second goal of the season when she rebounded her own header, from a Tayler Franklin corner kick, and found the right side of the goal.

"I thought my header was going in but once it bounced back out, I was ready for the second ball," Monica Carlos said about her goal.

Adams State knotted the match at a goal apiece in the 56th minute on Jenna Iwaniec unassisted goal.

With just 4:25 to go in the match, Sam Burneo picked a perfect time to score her first collegiate goal. She took a Leilani Weirnicki deflection and launched a shot just outside the goalie box and found the net.

"Right before the shot, coach told me that if the shot comes out, hit the ball and it happened," Sam Burneo said about the goal.

Sarah Schnetzler made four saves in the match and faced 11 Grizzly shots.

The Mavericks will have a showdown with the Regis Rangers on Sunday at Walker Field.
