Volleyball Nets 3-0 Win in Spearfish

Box Score SPEARFISH, S.D. – Christian Otzen and Melissa Hess combined for 30 of Colorado Mesa's 49 kills to lead the Maverick volleyball team to a 3-0 win at Black Hills Saturday (Oct. 12).
 
Audrey Steinkirchner added seven kills, and Casey ball chipped in five.
 
"Melissa, Christian and Steinkirchner all attacked really well," said head coach Dave Fleming. "Casey did a great job after not playing last night."
 
CMU used a seven point rally early in the first set and closed the set on a six point rally to win 25-15.
 
Mesa won the second set 25-16 and hit a match-high .326 with 19 kills to win the third set 25-21.
 
The Yellowjackets hit .063 with 25 kills and 18 errors in the loss.
 
"Today was another good defensive effort, and we had a balanced attack," said Fleming.
 
Sunni Rae Baird finished with 10 digs, and Jordyn Moody tallied 39 assists and both of the team's service aces.
 
"Sunni is doing a great job managing the defense, and Moody is doing the same with the offense," said Fleming.
 
"Our block was really good," said Melissa Hess after the team finished with five blocks for the match. "Our offense adjusted well to what they were giving us."
 
CMU remains atop the RMAC standings with a 7-1 league record and a 14-2 overall mark.
 
Mesa will play a non-conference match at South Dakota School of Mines Sunday (Oct. 13).
