Mavs Lose First Home Game, Fall to #1 Metro State 64-52

Colorado Mesa (12-4, 9-3 RMAC) men dropped their first home game of the season to No. 1-ranked Metro State University 64-52 in front of 2,011 fans inside Brownson Arena on Friday night. The win extended the Roadrunners unbeaten season to 16-0, 12-0 RMAC.  

Mike Melillo posted a double-double registering a team high 18 points and game high 12 rebounds.  Jeff Hart finished with 10 points, three steals and two assists. Paul Walter handed out a game high six assists.

Metro State nearly ran away with the game in the first half holding a 34-21 advantage at intermission. Metro's largest lead of 16 points in the first half came with 33-seconds remaining on a lay-up by Demetrius Miller. Miller tallied 13 first half points for the Roadrunners.

CMU opened the second half on a 3-point shot by Jeff Hart and the Mavericks quickly closed the double digit deficit to three points (35-38) with a 14-4 run. The teams traded baskets until the 11:52 mark when Landon Vermeer connected for his first three points of the game; a trey to tie the game at 42-42. Metro answered back with a trey before the Mavericks hit two consecutive 3-pointers (Daniel Estes, Mike Melillo) to take their first lead (48-45) since the opening bucket of the contest. Metro's Miller tied the game at 48-48 and the Roadrunners never looked back; outscoring CMU 19-4 in the final 8:43 of the game.

CMU shot 37 percent (20-54) from the field and hit on 6 of 8 free throws. Metro State shot 43 percent (22-51) from the floor and went to the foul line 25 times, hitting 17 of 25. Metro held a 37-32 rebound edge and forced 13 CMU turnovers, nine in the first half.

CMU will look to rebound against Regis University on Saturday night in Brownson Arena. Tip-off is 7:30 p.m.
