Mavs Split at Season Opening Oredigger Classic

CMU volleyball opened the 2012 season Friday afternoon with a 3-1 (26-24, 25-19, 22-25, 25-10) win over St. Josephs at the Oredigger Classic in Golden, CO on the campus of Colorado School of Mines. Saturday evening the Mavericks fell to Wayne State College 3-0 (17-25, 21-25, 14-25), wrapping up day one of the two-day tournament.

In the victory over St. Josephs College, CMU's Casey Ball recorded 24 kills in her first match as a Maverick and was joined by Christian Otzen and Kelly Regimbal's 11 and 10 kills respectively. Otzen recorded a double-double with 13 digs (11 kills). CMU tallied six service aces and 7.0 team blocks in the four set victory. Sophomore setter Jordyn Moody finished with 51 assists and five digs. Megan Rush finished with a game high 21 digs.

Wayne State had three players register double-digit kills and digs, holding the Mavericks to a .050 attack percentage in the three sets. Casey Ball led the way with 10 kills as the team finished with 33 kills, 26 errors on a 139 attempts. Wayne State hit .268 in the match with 44 kills, 11 errors on 123 attempts.  Wayne finished with 11 team blocks to CMU's four. Megan Rush led all players with 25 digs.

CMU enters day two of the tournament 1-1 overall and Wayne State moves to 2-0 heading in to Saturday's action in Golden. CMU will play Incarnate Word at 10:00 am and close out the tournament at 2:30 pm against Dallas Baptist.
