Mavericks Inch Closer to RMAC Title with Doubleheader Sweep

            The Colorado Mesa Mavericks crept closer to the RMAC Title with a doubleheader sweep of the CSU-Pueblo ThunderWolves on Saturday at Suplizio Field. CMU won by scores of 8-2 and 5-4. The Mavericks move to 35-10 on the season and 29-6 in the RMAC. The ThunderWolves drop to 25-20 and 22-13 in the RMAC and are officially eliminated from RMAC Regular Season Championship contention.

            The Mavericks are now riding a seven game win streak and are winners in 16 of their past 17 games.

            In the opener, Jared Christensen pitched a complete game and Jeff Popick drove in 4 runs to lead the Mavericks to an 8-2 win. Christensen eclipsed the 10 win mark by throwing all 7.0 innings and allowed 2 runs on 8 hits walked none and struck out 6.

            Jeff Popick finished the game 2-for-4 with 4 RBIs, a run scored and a double while Justin Rosales hit his team-leading 6th homerun of the season.

            In the nightcap, Mitch Corwin continued his assault on the ThunderWolf pitchers by hitting a walk-off single to give the Mavericks the 5-4 win in the bottom of the seventh. Corwin finished the game 1-for-3.

            Dakota Behr picked up his third win of the season in relief, pitching 1.1 innings of scoreless relief.

            Braden Box finished the game 3-for-4 with 2 runs scored and an RBI from the leadoff spot. Box also extended his RMAC leading stolen bases clip by swipiing 2 bases in the win.

            Dustin Fackrell belted a game-tying solo homerun in the bottom of the sixth inning. The homer was Fackrell's was his 5th of the season.

            The Mavericks can win the RMAC Title on Sunday with a win and a New Mexico Highlands loss to Nebraska-Kearney.

            The series will conclude with a single nine-inning game at Suplizio Field. First pitch is slated for 12:00pm
