Box Score 2 The Colorado Mesa University baseball team split a doubleheader with Metro State Roadrunners Sunday afternoon at Auraria Field in Denver. The Mavericks lost game one 5-3 but were able to rebound in game two, scoring 9 runs in the first inning en route to a 13-0 victory. CMU won three out of four games in the series and improve their overall record to 8-4 on the season and 3-1 in RMAC play.
In game one, the Roadrunners jumped out to 4-0 lead after four innings but the answered back in the seventh inning, scoring one unearned run in the inning. Then in the eighth, the Mavericks tallied two runs to cut the Metro State lead to just a single run. IN the bottom of the eighth, the Roadrunners scored an insurance run to push their lead to 5-3. That's how the game would finish as CMU could not mount a comeback in the ninth.
Garrett Carpenter got the start and went 5.0 innings, allowing 4 runs on 5 hits, walked one while striking out 6. Carpenter took the loss and is now 0-3 on the season.
Dustin Fackrell led the Mavericks offensively, going 2-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI.
In the series finale, the Mavericks scored 9 runs in the first inning on their way to a series winning 13-0 victory.
Colton Little and
Braden Box both had two-run singles in the first inning to pace the Mavericks offense.
Jeff Popick,
Sergio Valenzuela, and Little all finished the game with 3 hits.
Jared Christensen got the start in the series finale. Christensen (2-1) went 5.0 innings and gave up 3 hits, walked one and struck out one. He combined with
Kris Carlson and Luke Anderson on the shutout.
Colorado Mesa will conitnue its road swing next weekend with a four-game series with RMAC rival CSU-Pueblo in Pueblo, Colo. CSU-Pueblo took three-of-four games in the series with Colorado Mines over the weekend.
