Box Score 2 The Colorado Mesa baseball team split a doubleheader with the New Mexico Highlands Cowboys in Las Vegas, N.M. on Saturday afternoon. The Mavericks dropped game one 8-6 before winning the night cap 9-3. With the split the Mavericks are now 20-9 on the season and 14-5 in the RMAC while the Cowboys are now 20-8 and 13-6 in RMAC games.
In game one, the Mavericks spotted the Cowboys a 7-0 lead after three innings and could never fully recover as the game ended in a 8-6 loss for CMU. NM Highlands scored 8 runs on 12 hits while the Mavericks could only muster 6 runs on 9 hits and left 9 runners on base.
Jared Christensen pitched a complete game allowing 8 runs (6 earned) on 12 hits and struck out 4. Christensen was tagged for the loss and is now 6-2 on the season.
Austin Kaiser finished the game 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
In game two, CMU tallied runs in every frame except for the second and third innings including a 3 run seventh to seal the 9-3 win. The Cowboys tried mounting a let inning comeback but closer
Derek Benham shut it down pitching the final 1.1 innings and only allowed 2 hits.
Dylan Evans got the start and earned the win. Evans (3-0) allowed 3 runs on 8 hits, walked one and struck out 7 in the win.
Braden Box and
Colton Schoelkopf each had 3 hits for the Mavericks. Box finished the game 3-for-5 with 2 runs scored and an RBI while Schoelkopf went 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
The Mavericks and Cowboys will conclude the series tomorrow from Brandt Field in Las Vegas, N.M. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00pm.
