CMU falls at Chadron State 80-67

CMU (11-10, 9-8 RMAC) men's basketball team dropped its second consecutive game falling to Chadron State College 80-67 on Saturday night in Chadron.

Colton Burgon scored a game high 23 points for the Mavericks in 24 minutes of action. CMU had three players in double digits but were outshot and out-rebounded by the Eagles. Mike Melillo finished with 11 points and Jeff Hart recorded 10 points and three assists. Chadron State shot 52 percent (26-50) from the field and held a 34-27 rebound margin. The Eagles went to the foul line 37 times (23-37) and hit 5 of 10 from the 3-point line.

CMU shot 45 percent (24-53) from the field, 3 of 10 from beyond the arc and hit 16 of 22 free throws. CMU turned the ball over 16 times resulting in 17 points for the Eagles.

Chadron State held a 37-31 halftime lead but the Mavericks opened the second half with a 10-4 run to the tie the game at 41-41 at the 15:28 mark. Chadron scored the next seven points for a 48-41 lead and never trailed again in the contest. CMU pulled to within two points on two occasions, the last coming at 6:05 (55-57) remaining in regulation, but the Eagles went on a 14-4 spurt in the next five minutes to secure the win.

The Eagles were led by Kevin McClelland's 18 points and five rebounds.

CMU will return home to host New Mexico Highlands and Western New Mexico this Friday and Saturday at Brownson Arena. Tipoff is set for 7:30 pm in Brownson Arena.
