Colorado Mesa (7-3, 4-2 RMAC) dropped back-to-back games for the first time this season, falling to undefeated Adams State University (7-0, 5-0 RMAC) on Monday evening in Alamosa.
CMU had four players register double digits but could not overcome the Grizzlies 53 percent shooting from the floor while sinking 26 of 33 from the foul line.
Colton Burgon led the Mavericks recording his fourth double-double on the season; 21 points and 11 rebounds. He had two blocks, two assists and three steals in 31 minutes of action.
Paul Walter recorded a season high 14 points hitting 4 of 5 from the floor and 5 of 6 from the foul line. Mike Melillo finished with 11 points, three assists and
Daniel Estes tallied 10 points and two assists.
CMU trailed 44-40 at the break that saw two lead changes and five ties. CMU's biggest lead in the first half was two points on a Burgon layup to start the game.
Early in the second half the Grizzlies extended the lead to nine points (52-43) before the Mavericks put together a 13-4 spurt to tie the game at 56-56 on a tip-in by Walter with 12:35 left in regulation. CMU never had a lead in the second half and despite tying the game again at 58-58, the closest the Mavs would come was two points (66-68) following a 3-pointer by
Daniel Estes (7:05). The next three possessions resulted in turnovers and the Grizzlies held on for the victory.
Adams State was led by Norvell Arnold's game high 22 points.
The Mavericks will break for the holiday and return to action on January 4-5 when they host Colorado Christian and Colorado School of Mines on Friday and Saturday respectively. Tip-off in Brownson Arena is set for 7:30 p.m. each evening.
