Colorado Mesa (4-1, 1-0 RMAC) opened up Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action on the road at Chadron State on Friday night, holding off the Eagles 77-62 on opening night of RMAC action.
Colton Burgon was nearly unstoppable for the Mavericks finishing with a game high 26 points, six rebounds, three assists, one block and one steal. Burgon was 11 of 16 from the floor and 4 of 5 from the foul line.
Jeff Hart recorded 13 points and Mike Melillo had 11 points in the contest. Paul Walter finished with a game high seven rebounds and tallied eight points and three steals.
Chadron opened the game with a 3-pointer and the Mavs answered back quickly going on an 18-3 run and an 18-6 lead with 13:41 in the first half. CMU extended the lead to 23-11 with just over 10 minutes remaining in the first half on a jumper by Burgon. The Eagles put together a 15-2 run as the Mavs missed six shots and turned the ball over four times to help the Eagles take a 26-25 lead with 5:52 left in the half. CMU would close out the half with an 8-3 run and a 33-29 halftime lead.
CMU never trailed in the second half as the Eagles tied the score twice (44-44 at 12:29), as CMU put together a 13-0 run and never trailed again in the contest. Burgon scored 18-second half points, including back-to-back baskets and two made free throws in the Mavs' 13-0 spurt.
The Mavericks will travel to Black Hills State University in Spearfish, SD on Saturday for a 7:30 p.m. contest with the Yellow Jackets.
