Colorado Mesa (13-8, 7-6 RMAC) fell to #23 Metro State 3-1 (23-25, 16-25, 25-21, 21-25) on Saturday afternoon at the Auraria Event Center on the campus of Metro State University. The Roadrunners improve to 14-7, 9-4 in the league with the victory.
The Mavericks led 23-22 in set one before the Roadrunners strung together three consecutive points (2 Metro kills, one CMU error) for the 25-23 win. CMU came out strong in set two taking an 8-5 lead and again the Roadrunners stormed back winning 10 straight points for a 15-8 lead. Metro went on to take the set 25-16.
CMU jumped out to a large lead in the third set leading 23-14 before the Roadrunners staged another string of seven consecutive points to pull to within 21-23. CMU closed out the set on back-to-back kills by Christian Otzen and Kelly Regimbal.
Metro closed out the match and the victory in the fourth set by the score of 25-21. The Roadrunners never trailed in the final set recording 14 kills.
Haleigh Higgins finished with a double-double, recording a team high 14 kills and 15 digs. Otzen had 11 kills, seven digs and three blocks. Abby Ney and Regimbal had nine kills each. Ney and Regimbal combined for nine of the Mavericks 18 block assists.
CMU gets back on the winning track at home this weekend when they host Western State Colorado on Friday at 7 p.m. in Brownson Arena. On Saturday the Mavs will host west division leader Adams State at 4 p.m. in Brownson Arena.
