Colorado Mesa University (3-4, 3-2) notched its first home win defeating Fort Lewis College 36-12 on Saturday evening at Stocker Stadium. The Mavericks ran for 366 yards, passed for 179 yards and recorded 116 punt return yards including an 82-yard punt return for a touchdown by Trevor deBraga.
Jake Cimolino and DJ Hubbard combined for 326 yards and three touchdowns. Cimolino ran for 220 yards and two touchdowns and Hubbard finished with a season high 110 yards on just seven carries and one touchdown.
Cimolino gave the Mavericks a 6-0 lead on a 21-yard touchdown run with 8:18 remaining in the first quarter (kick failed). CMU extended the lead to 13-0 on a Trevor deBraga 82-yard punt return after taking a pitch from his brothe Trent, and racing down the sideline for the score. CMU closed out the first half on a Caleb Pavy 26-yard field goal for a 16-0 halftime lead.
Fort Lewis College opened the second half stopping the Mavericks on its first possession. The Skyhawks drove 54 yards in six plays scoring on a 25-yard touchdown reception from Tim Jenkins to Jordan Benton to pull to within 16-6.
Fort Lewis stopped the Mavericks on their next two possessions; a fourth-and-six attempt and a three-and-out series. CMU forced the Skhyawks to punt with 3:57 remaining in the third quarter and the Mavericks drove 73 yards in 11 plays scoring on a Cimolino 3-yard touchdown run. CMU closed out the third quarter with a 23-6 lead.
CMU would score twice in the fourth quarter when Jason Haferman found Alex Zemezonak for a 38-yard touchdown reception (kick blocked). On the ensuing FLC possession the Skyhawks' Jenkins was picked off by Michael Brady who returned it 24 yards to the CMU 44-yard line.
The Mavericks would drive 81-yards on back-to-back rushes by Hubbard; a 46-yard run to the FLC 35-yard line and on the next play Hubbard ran 35 yards for a touchdown and a 36-6 CMU lead.
FLC drove 87-yards on 12 plays for their final score as Jenkins ran it in from the one-yard line with 3:28 remaining in the game.
Haferman was 14-of-29 for 175 yards and a one touchdown. Zemezonak finished with three receptions for a game high 73 yards and one touchdown.
Valencio Gray and Trevor deBraga each finished with 13 tackles, including eight solo from Gray.
CMU finished the game with a season high 545 total offensive yards averaging 8.3 yards per rush and 11.9 yards per completion.
CMU will travel to Colorado School of Mines on Saturday and compete for the Nyikos Cup. Kick-off is slated for Noon.
