Mavs hold off Cougars on the road, 70-68

CMU (9-8, 7-6 RMAC) men's basketball team outlasted Colorado Christian 70-68 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action on Saturday night in Lakewood. The win snapped a two game losing streak and five game road losing streak.

Kevin Screen's two free throws with 5.6-seconds remaining in regulation sealed the win for the Mavericks. Screen finished perfect on the night, hitting 3 of 3 from the field and 2 of 2 from the foul line, clinching the victory.  He finished the night with nine points, four rebounds, two assists and one steal.

CMU held a two point lead at half (39-37) and held as much as a five point lead mid-way through the second half. The Cougars tied the game (51-51) on a trey by Luke Gilliam at 13:02 and the two teams went back and forth with six lead changes in the final 10 minutes. CCU tied the game at 68-68 with 1:31 left and forced a CMU turnover with just over a minute remaining. CCU missed a 3-point field goal attempt and Colton Burgon pulled down the rebound with 36-seconds left in the game. Screen was fouled with 5.6 seconds and sank both free throws for the victory.

Colton Burgon led all players with 19 points hitting 6 of 8 from the floor and 7 of 8 from the foul line. Mike Melillo finished with 11 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots. Shawn King had 10 points and three rebounds.

CMU shot 52 percent (26-50) from the field and out-rebounded the Cougars 34-27.

CMU will return home to host Regis University on Friday night. Nationally ranked Metro State College will face the Mavericks on Saturday night at Brownson Arena. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
