Colorado Mesa University (7-5, 5-3) fell to Regis University (4-7, 1-6) on Saturday night at Regis Fieldhouse in Denver. The Rangers held off the Mavericks comeback bid and notched their first league victory of the season.
CMU trailed by nine points (47-56) with under two minutes remaining in regulation before back-to-back baskets by Jeff Hart cut the Ranger lead to four (52-56) with 1:31 left. Hart hit a jumper and followed with a 3-pointer off a turnover to close the gap. CMU's 4-1 run on consecutive baskets by Michael Bear and the Ranger lead was just one point (56-57) with 56 seconds remaining.
Regis pushed the lead to three sinking two free throws and the Mavs again closed the gap to one after an offensive rebound and layup by Hart at the 32-second mark. Regis hit 1 of 2 free throws (25 seconds) and CMU trailed by two with the ball and a chance to tie or win the game. CMU's shot with three seconds left missed and the Rangers win 60-58.
Colton Burgon posted a double-double finishing with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Michael Bear led all players with 16 points. Jeff Hart finished with 11 points.
CMU shot 47 percent (23-49) from the floor and hit 11 of 17 from the foul line. CMU was just 1 of 9 from the 3-point line and that came late on Hart's trey in the final minutes of regulation.
Regis shot 33 percent (19-58) and finished 5 of 16 from beyond the arc. The Rangers hit 17 of 22 from the foul line, connecting on 11 of 16 in the second half.
CMU will return home this weekend to host CSU-Pueblo on Friday and UC-Colorado Springs on Saturday night. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. in Brownson Arena.
