Mavs Triumph in Home Opener

Box Score         The Colorado Mesa Mavericks won their home opener tonight at Walker Field 2-1 over the visiting Dixie State Red Storm. The Mavericks improved tecord on their record on the season to 1-2 while the Red Storm dropped to 1-2.
        The two teams played a tightly contested battle for the first 77 minutes of the match. CMU broke through in the 78th minute with a goal from senior Sophia Whigham (Tucson, Ariz.). Whigham took a cross from sophomore Kaitlynn Holt (Wahiawa, Hawaii) which was tipped by junior Kaselyn Butters (Grand Junction, Colo.) and Whigham found the left side of the net. It was her first goal of the season and the third of her Maverick career.
        After the goal, the Mavericks defense tightened up as Dixie mounted an offensive attack. The Red Storm took 3 shots in a 2 minute span after the goal. But CMU survived and were able to kill the final 23 minutes of the match.
        CMU's Arielle Harris (Phoenix, Ariz.) earned her first shutout of the season making 7 saves in the win. The shutout was her 3rd of her career.
        Colorado Mesa will continue the homestand on Saturday as they take on the Grand Canyon University 'Lopes Saturday at 7:00pm at Walker Field.
