Colorado Mesa (1-3) fell in five sets to University of Findlay 3-2 (20-25, 19-25, 25-17, 25-22, 14-16) Saturday afternoon at the Oredigger Classic in Golden. It was the fourth consecutive five-set match for the Mavericks who opened the 2011 season at the Oredigger Classic hosted by Colorado School of Mines in Golden.
Kelly Regimbal led the way with 17 kills, seven digs and four block assists. Libero Megan Rush finished with 25 digs and three service aces.
Trailing by two sets, CMU went on a 12-3 run to take an 18-13 lead in the third set. Another run of six straight points including back-to-back service aces by Rush, the Mavs prevailed 25-17 in set three.
CMU trailed most of the fourth set but tied the game at 16-16. An ace by Jordyn Moody gave CMU its first lead 17-16. The Mavs held off Findlay 25-22 to push the match to five sets.
In set five CMU held the largest lead, 8-5 as the teams stayed within two points of each other throughout the set. CMU held the lead until UF tied the game at 11-11. CMU and UF traded the next six points for a 14-14 tie. Findlay closed out the match on a CMU service error and a kill by Jessica Vonins for Findlay's first win of the season.
CMU will host the Holiday Inn Crossroads Classic beginning Thursday night at the Maverick Center. CMU will square off against Dixie State at 7 p.m. in Brownson Arena.
