The Mesa State Mavericks battled the elements today and prevailed with a 6-2 win over the N.M. Highlands Cowboys. On the weekend, the Mavericks took three out of the four games to win the series and go into a crucial RMAC series next weekend at Nebraska-Kearney. The Mavericks currently trail the Lopers by 2.5 games.
Mesa State could not generate a timely hit early in the game as they left eleven runners on base through six innings and had not scored a run.
The Cowboys scored one run in the first on a leadoff home run and they notched a single run in the top half of the sixth inning.
In the bottom half of the eighth inning, the Mavericks came through. Pinch hitter Chase Moore (Ogden, Utah) laced a 1-1 pitch down the left field line to give them their first run of the game. A perfectly executed safety squeeze by Braden Box (Twin Falls, Idaho) knotted the game at 2-2. Greg Anderson (Tempe, Ariz.) hit a RBI single off the pitcher to give the Mavericks the lead for good. In the inning, they scored six runs on seven hits and even left the bases loaded.
Tyler Ehlers (Aurora, Colo.) got his first collegiate start and faired very well. Ehlers pitched six innings and allowed two runs on seven hits, walked one and struck out four. Reliever Tim Moore (Denver, Colo.) picked up the win in relief and pushed his season record to 2-1.
Ryan Shelton (Woodinville, Wash.) set the table for the offense all day and finished the game 3-for-4 with a run scored and his third double of the season.
Friday's game in Kearney is scheduled to start at 6:00pm central time from Memorial Field.
