Mavericks Drop Series to Roadrunners

                The Mesa State Mavericks fell in a four-game series to the Metro State Roadrunners 3-1 in Denver this week. The Mavericks are clinging to a half game lead in the RMAC Mountain Division and two and a half games out of the overall RMAC lead.

 

                In the series opener, big innings doomed the Mavericks as Metro State scored four runs in the third and five runs in the fifth en route to a 10-8 win. The Mavericks outhit the Roadrunners 14-9 but left 14 runners on base.

 

                Jeff Popick finished the game 3-for-6 with four RBIs and in the first inning hit his second homerun of the season. Colton Schoelkopf also finished the game with three hits and scored two runs.

 

                Nolan Snell took the loss and fell to 5-3 on the season. Snell finished the game with five strikeouts and kept his lead in the RMAC with 71 strikeouts on the season.

 

                In the first game of Friday's doubleheader, Mesa State scored runs in every inning except the first and seventh innings to beat Metro State 7-4. The Mavericks outhit the Roadrunners 14-5 but once again left 9 runners on base.

 

                Five Mavericks had multiple hits in the game and eight of nine batters hit safely in the game. Ian McKnight led the Mavericks onslaught with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate.

 

                Jared Christensen picked up the win on the mound, pitching a complete game. Christensen (5-2) allowed four runs on five hits, walked three and struck out three. His ERA of 3.10 on the season currently leads the RMAC.

 

                In the second game of the doubleheader, the Mavericks could only muster two hits in a 7-2 loss.

 

                Greg Anderson led the Mavericks with a 1-for-2 performance including his fourth homerun of the season.

 

                Dylan Evans took the loss and is now 4-3 on the season.

 

                In Saturday's series finale, the Mavericks dropped a 7-4 decision to the Roadrunners. The two teams both finished with nine hits but the Mavericks left 8 runners on base to the Roadrunners 3.

 

                Ian McKnight finished the game 1-for-3 with a double and two runs scored and Greg Anderson finished 1-for-5 with a triple and one RBI.

 

                Jake Perkins took the loss in relief and allowed his first run of the season. Perkins' record now sits at 0-1.

 

                The Mavericks record now stands at 23-15 on the season and 21-11 in the RMAC. The Mavericks will take on the CSU-Pueblo next weekend in a key RMAC series.

 

                Up next for the Mavericks is a Tuesday doubleheader with the Dixie State Red Storm. The Red Storm come into the two-game series with a 27-14 record. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 2:00pm.
