The Mesa State Mavericks and the New Mexico Highlands Cowboys split their Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference baseball games on Saturday at Suplizio Field. The Cowboys won game one by the score of 4-3 and the Mavericks won the nightcap 8-5. Mesa State improved to 15-10 overall and 13-6 in the RMAC.
In game one, the Mavericks scored three runs in the bottom of the third but the Cowboys answered with four runs in the top of the sixth inning that would be the difference in the ball game.
Jared Christensen (Alpine, Utah) would be tagged with the loss and drop his record to 2-2. Christensen pitched well going 5.1 innings and allowed four runs (one earned) on six hits, walked one and struck out four.
In the nightcap, Dylan Evans (Farmington, N.M.) threw a complete game and picked up his third win of the season in an 8-5 win. Evans went all seven innings and allowed five runs (three earned) on six hits, walked none and struck out six.
Greg Anderson (Tempe, Ariz.) pounded his team leading third homerun of the season in the bottom of the first inning. Anderson finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI.
Brian Bello (Ft. Collins, Colo.) continued his hot weekend with another 2-for-3 performance. Bello also hit his team leading third triple of the season to lead off the bottom half of the third inning.
The Mavericks and Cowboys will be back in action tomorrow at Suplizio Field. Game time has changed due to inclement weather scheduled to hit the Grand Junction area. First pitch is now scheduled for 11:30am.
